Online Depression Therapy

Depression doesn’t always look the way people expect it to.

Many of the adults I work with grew up in environments where their emotional needs weren’t consistently seen, validated, or supported. Over time, that can shape how you see yourself and the way you look at the world.

On paper, things may look completely fine. You might have a career, relationships with people you care about, and seem like you’re doing well enough to others.

But you may also carry around a quiet belief that something is wrong with you. That you should be doing better. That you’re somehow not trying hard enough.

“Am I Depressed?”

It’s fairly common for people who are struggling with depression to not recognize it as depression. Yes, they know something is wrong, but depression often feels too extreme for what they’re dealing with.

Instead, they come to therapy feeling unhappy or stuck. They often believe the problem is that they’re lazy, unmotivated, or unappreciative of all the good things in their life.

When I explain that these are actually very common signs of depression, many people are surprised.

But, the truth is:

You can be depressed and still go to work.

You can be depressed and maintain relationships.

You can be depressed and recognize that you’re privileged and your life looks “good on paper.”

Depression is often much quieter and more internal than people realize.

Depression Doesn’t Look the Same for Everyone

Depression can show up in very different ways depending on the person and their life experiences.

For some people it looks like sadness or hopelessness. For others, it shows up more as numbness, apathy, or a sense of disconnection from life.

You might notice things like:

  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected

  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy

  • Constant self-criticism or feeling like you’re not good enough

  • Feeling exhausted even when you’ve gotten plenty of rest

  • Difficulty motivating yourself to do basic daily tasks

  • Feeling like everything takes more energy than it should

For people who grew up taking on a lot of emotional responsibility early in life, depression can also include a deep habit of blaming yourself for how you feel.

Instead of recognizing that something is wrong, you assume the problem is you.

How Depression Therapy Can Help

In therapy, we focus on understanding the patterns underneath your depression and helping you respond to them differently.

Together, we may work on:

  • Identifying the self-critical beliefs that keep depression in place

  • Understanding how your early environment shaped the way you see yourself

  • Learning how to respond to depressive thoughts in a healthier way

  • Rebuilding motivation and energy gradually

  • Developing tools to regulate your mood and nervous system

  • Practicing self-compassion instead of self-blame

When depression begins to lift, many people notice that life feels noticeably easier. Relationships improve. Work becomes more manageable. Things that once felt overwhelming start to feel possible again.
